Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry involves the 'restoration' of decayed, broken and chipped teeth back to its shape and function. This can usually be achieved with 'fillings'.

Cosmetic Dentistry complements restorative dentistry as it encompasses the aesthetics aspect of fillings.

Would you ever give someone an ugly bunch of flowers?

At Smile Hawthorn, we would never give you an ugly filling. We endeavour to ensure that all our restorations are natural and aesthetic, to match your beautiful smile - we want you to show off our work!

Amalgam Fillings

Dental amalgam has been commonly used as a filling material for over 100 years, with some studies suggesting its use as far back as the T'ang Dynasty in China (as early as 659AD!)

Although amalgam is a strong and long lasting filling material, it is not tooth coloured and does not adhere to the tooth, which may contribute to tooth fracture.

At Smile Hawthorn, we do not use amalgam as a filling. Instead we use tooth coloured resin composites and highly durable and aesthetic ceramics.

Resin Composite Fillings

A resin composite filling is a combination of tooth coloured plastic resin and glass particles. It has become the more common filling material used by dentists over the past 20 years.

It is an adhesive material that bonds to the tooth structure, and can be easily moulded in the mouth to the required shape. However, due to the underlying plastic nature of the material, it tends to wear down faster and can break under heavy biting forces.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic (porcelain) fillings are highly aesthetic and durable tooth coloured filling materials. They are made of the same material that dental crowns and bridges are made from and offer superior colour, strength and longevity compared to composite fillings. Unlike crowns, ceramic fillings are designed to fit within the cavity rather than surround the entire tooth.

Ceramic fillings can be manufactured on-site at our clinic and placed in a single appointment, allowing you to leave with a strong, natural and aesthetic tooth coloured filling.
