Waterpipes…AKA…Hookah, Hubble Bubble, Shisha or whatever it may be called around where you live are hazardous to your health. There is a misconception that using waterpipes is less dangerous than cigarettes.
However, the Journal of the American Dental Association found that waterpipe smoking is associated with gum disease, oral cancer, oesophageal cancer and dry sockets as well as non oral related conditions such as lung cancer and heart disease.
Waterpipe smoking has its beginnings along time ago, with some sources claiming it originated in India, whilst others in Persia. A waterpipe heats up a form of tobacco that is often available in various flavours, with the smoke makings its way through a pot of water in the pipe and is inhaled through a rubber hose with a mouthpiece.
As waterpipe sessions can go for up to 60 minutes or sometimes longer, a smoker could inhale between 50-200 puffs compared to just smoking a cigarette which may only take 5-10 minutes. Due to the variations of nicotine available in waterpipies, it can be likened to smoking 100 cigarettes.

Dentists for cleaner water was an initiative set up between 2008 and 2011 by the Australian Dental Association Victoria Branch and the Victorian Water Industry and Environmental Protection Authority in Victoria to promote the installation and use of dental amalgam separators in private dental practices to filter waste amalgam before it enters the sewage system. Mercury, which is a component of amalgam fillings, can be released to the environment when amalgam is removed from patients and can be either rinsed into sewage systems or disposed of in landfill.
Smile Hawthorn was established in 2014. Although the Dentists for Cleaner Water initiative was not operational anymore, the practice voluntarily opted to install an Amalgam Separator in the clinic at the time it was set up, that reduces up to 95% of waste amalgam from entering the sewage system.
More recently, the Minimata Convention on Mercury and Dental Amalgam called for a phase down on the use of amalgam through various measures.
