So the world smiles with you!
Dental Health Week’s ‘My Smile’ campaign has flagged something worth sitting with: Gen Z tends to get health information from the internet and influencers well ahead of qualified professionals. Nowhere does that show up more than cosmetic dentistry — a space full information and not all is good.
Cosmetic dentistry is any treatment focused on improving the look of your teeth and smile whether changing their shape, colour or position, or replacing teeth that are missing. It spans a huge range, from something as simple as smoothing a chipped tooth through to a full smile makeover.
Whitening: A bleaching gel used at home or in-clinic to lighten your natural tooth colour. Important to know that it only whitens natural tooth structure, not fillings, crowns or dentures, so an otherwise-matching smile can end up uneven if you whiten around existing dental work. Orthodontics: Braces or clear aligner trays that gradually move your teeth into a straighter position. Veneers: A thin layer of ceramic or composite material bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Some of the natural tooth surface is usually polished away first to make room. Crowns: A ceramic or metal cap that covers the entire visible tooth, generally used when more of the natural structure needs protecting or rebuilding. Implants: A titanium screw placed into the jawbone to anchor a ceramic replacement tooth.
Influencers aren’t trained to diagnose what’s actually causing your smile to look the way it does, they’re not accountable for the outcome, and a treatment that looks great on someone else’s teeth might be the wrong option, or even harmful, for yours. The right starting point is always a dentist: treat any underlying dental disease first (your health takes priority over appearance), identify what’s actually causing the look you’re unhappy with, and build a plan around that, not around a trend.
Cosmetic dentistry is usually elective, which means the best results come from a genuine back-and-forth between you and your dentist and not a treatment picked off a social feed. If something’s been bothering you about your smile, Dental Health Week is a good excuse to actually ask, instead of scrolling further.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
